As we commemorate the International Day Of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) today, December 3, 2024, the Centre for Women Studies and Intervention (CWSI) joins the global community in embracing this year’s theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”
CWSI has been committed to mainstreaming disability inclusion into its programming through a Rights-Based Model, recognizing that participation in society and access to equal opportunities are fundamental human rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, we champion disability rights and advocate for the inclusion of Persons With Disabilities, especially women with disabilities in leadership and decision-making structures.
CWSI calls on the Nigerian government to strengthen the enforcement of disability rights legislation, particularly the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act. We urge the inclusion of bold, specific budgetary provisions that empower Persons With Disabilities to assume leadership roles at all levels.
As we mark this significant day, CWSI reaffirms its commitment to promoting the leadership and active participation of Persons With Disabilities in Nigeria. We stand with the disability community in challenging stereotypes and advocating for inclusion. Together, we can build a future where everyone’s unique abilities are recognized and valued, enabling all individuals to thrive and make meaningful contributions to society.
We are leaving no one behind.
